New Dangerous Dogs Laws
Victorian State Government have introduced new laws regarding dangerous dogs!
These changes give council rangers the right to seize and destroy dogs if they are
1. Unregistered 2. Unsupervised in a public area and 3. Posing a risk to the public.
You will not have any rights of appeal against a decision if you dog IS NOT REGISTERED!
There is also changes about if your dog is on other peoples premises, shaking an object, rushing towards children or adults! Taken literally.....my dogs rush to my gate when I have a visitor and this could be construed as dangerous if someone found this to be!
Regarding shaking an object....If they vigoriously shake a toy or stick this can be construed by someone that this could be a dangerous dog. If they then complain to your council, your dog can be seiezed.....AND AS STATED.....IF NOT REGISTERED...... YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO APPEAL THE DECISION!!!
Fines go through the Roof!
$500 fine for unregistered dogs.
"Our dogs do like a walk, with or without humans"
I know there is different personalities in our breed, some are homebodies and never like to be far from us, then there are those that love walks, dogs and people. I would say 70% are the latter. Well then add the season bitch, she will definately get the wonderlust! I have just had 2 that have just amazed at how clever they are at finding the next weakest point of your yards defences.
I have spent $1000's re doing fences on 3 country properties to keep them secure. I have always had the added worry of livestock in particular sheep. If the farmer sees them even in his paddock he is allowed to kill them! Pity there is no definition on what a farmer is as there are plenty of people who own 7, 10 or 20 acres and have a dozen "lawnmowers" that consider themselves farmers! I consider them blockies mowing the grass the "cheap way"!
So what I am saying is please register your precious animals and don't listen to the 6 months you don't have to, it is 3 months of age onwards!
Protect Your Best Friends
As I read into these new changes, unless you register dog, your friend is in the hands of others! I can imagine dog fearful people reporting my dogs even when in thier own yard! After all the breed standard is for "an impressive dog" and that they are! Muscular and powerful! I have seen a 30kg British Bulldog pull down a 750kg bull. These dogs are capable of anything and after all it is what someone percieves, not what is the reality, that will open the door to your dog's being seized and you having no rights.
I agree there needs to be protection of children, the elderly and other animals from dangerous dogs, even perfectly fit adults.
I bought a dog from a friend and she had been tramatized by a smaller dog I think. She had a pathological hatred of smaller dogs could have quite easily killed one! My neighbour and I saw this and he owns a sweet little old Foxie. With much heartache for myself and my friend and his wife we had this girl put down.
Sometimes there is nothing you can do! My neighbour doesn't deserve to have his beloved pet mauled and probably killed if not seriously injured. His dog doesn't desrve that to happen. I don't need the repercussions/guilt! I could not rehome her as I knew it would just be the same headache for everyone somewhere else, and I do not know anyone who could retrain her. After so many dogs if I couldn't only a dog whisperer could!
I agree with tough lines on dangerous dogs, but I also see this law is not perfect and I see the problems this will cause many innocent and harmless dogs! For instance my dog gets out...as they do....is on a neighbours front lawn when they want to go outside. They are too frightened and ring the council! The person embelishes a little! Well......IF NOT REGISTERED, YOUR DOG WILL BE KILLED!
